Synopsis

The Complete Story

"Sadan Hanım" is an 85-minute feature documentary exploring Alzheimer's disease through time, memory, and identity, told through the extraordinary life of an Istanbul woman whose memories reach back nearly a century.

Born in 1927, Sadan Hanım lived a life rich in personal and historical memories. When Alzheimer's entered her life at the age of 86, those memories began to slowly fade. As her past dissolves, the film follows both the woman she once was and the person she is becoming.

The progression of the illness is portrayed through rare original 8 mm archival footage filmed by Sadan Hanım and her family across Turkey, Europe, and the United States, interwoven with more than 140 hours of observational footage recorded over a period of two years. As past and present merge, memory itself becomes the narrative voice.

Through this unique structure, "Sadan Hanım" creates an intimate and deeply human portrait of memory fading, identity shifting, and the universal effort to hold on. Awarded at multiple international film festivals, the documentary speaks to global audiences, appealing strongly to arthouse viewers, cultural broadcasters, and platforms seeking premium human-interest storytelling.

Three Acts of the Film

A century of life, a battle with memory, and a legacy that speaks to us all.

I

The Beginning

1933–1980s

Life before Alzheimer. Rare 8mm archival footage. Who was Sadan Hanım?

A journey through childhood and youth, family ties, and cultural heritage—captured in authentic home movies and photographs.

The story opens with a concert at the Harbiye Military Museum, where Sadan Hanım's husband conducts the Mehter March. From this moment, the film takes us back through rare 8mm archival footage and photographs, revealing the world in which Sadan Hanım was born and raised.

Through flashbacks, we witness her childhood, family life, and cultural environment—her bond with Ziyaeddin Bey, playful anecdotes from school days, and the social trends of the era. Music plays a central role, with scenes of Sadan and her sister performing violin concerts for their family.

As the narrative unfolds, intimate memories blend with historical fragments, offering a vivid portrait of a woman shaped by love, tradition, and time.

II

The Transformation

2016–2017

Alzheimer diagnosis at age 86. Over 140 hours of intimate documentation. What happens when memories fade?

The turning point where identity and memory begin to dissolve, observed through daily life and medical consultations.

At age 86, Sadan Hanım receives her Alzheimer's diagnosis—a turning point she faces without denial. Through over 140 hours of intimate observation, the film captures her struggle to process the disease while holding on to her identity.

Archival 8mm footage blends with present-day scenes, contrasting vibrant memories of Istanbul, family traditions, and travels abroad with the reality of cognitive decline. From joyful flashbacks to moments of solitude, ACT II reveals how memory fades yet resurfaces unexpectedly, shaping a deeply human journey.

III

The Legacy

2018–Present

The final chapter. What remains of a person when memories vanish? What can we learn?

In her last days, past and present blur into silence. Her story closes with gratitude and reflection—a farewell to memory.

In the final weeks, the family returns to their home in Moda. Memories that once defined Sadan Hanım—like childhood anecdotes—are now lost or distorted. Past and present blur as she confuses historical events and familiar faces.

The third medical examination confirms advanced-stage Alzheimer's. Scenes of Sadan Hanım resting, interwoven with visions of her younger self, evoke a poignant reflection: she never imagined these days would come, yet she remains grateful for life. The story closes with an image of her drifting into silence, framed by clouds—a farewell to memory.

"To love a person is to learn the song in their heart. And sing it to them when they have forgotten..."

— Arne Garborg
